BUTTE - The Rainbow Family has picked the Jackson area as the location for its upcoming gathering.
It is the same area the Rainbow Family chose in 2000, which is west of Jackson, according to the Forest Service. Montana Highway Patrol Captain Gary Becker met with the Beaverhead County Sheriff today to prepare for an influx of people to the area.
Butte Silver Bow Undersheriff George Skuletich also received a phone call from Becker regarding space at the Detention Center in case of overcrowding at Beaverhead County's jail.
In 2000, Butte Silver Bow detained several Rainbow Family members for theft and disorderly conduct. Local law enforcement will be holding meetings with the Forest Service and Beaverhead County Sheriff to prepare for the possibility of that happening again.
"I know we're going to get them coming through because of the I-90 corridor here. We'll get them coming through prior to the 4th. We have seen evidence that they have been in town already but they plan on being up there over the July 4th weekend and then it ends right before our Folk Festival begins here, so I imagine we'll see them coming through again at that time," Skuletich said.
Last week, the Rainbow Family Council was camped out past the Racetrack Campground. No arrests were made during their stay.
