HELENA - In October 2011, 140 Malamute dogs were rescued from Mike Chilinski's property in Jefferson County. Now, all the dogs have been sent to find new homes.
Twenty five Malamutes are headed to Virginia to hopefully find homes along the East Coast. This means the Malamute village facility on the west side of Helena will no longer be needed.
Twelve of the dogs remain at the Lewis and Clark Humane Society, but they too will be adopted out, making for a bittersweet ending.
"It is also very sad, you know bittersweet, we have had these guys in our care for 16 months and we knew this day was coming that they would be heading off where they needed to go but it is still sad to let them go," Lewis and Clark Humane Society Executive Director Gina Wiest said.
In December, Chilinski was sentenced to five years for animal cruelty.
