MALTA - Rail traffic in northern Montana was shut down Wednesday night due to a derailment near Malta.

BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas says 10 cars carrying soybeans derailed at about 10 a.m. Wednesday, and the derailment shut down the main line and a side track.

Crews were shoving cars off of the tracks late Wednesday and expected to have the line open early Thursday.

On average, 35 trains use the route each day, including two passenger trains.

The 104-car train originated in North Dakota and was headed to Seattle, and no injuries have been reported.
