UPDATE: The eastbound passing lane on I-90 from Manhattan to Belgrade is now open to the traveling public.
The eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 are closed from Manhattan to Belgrade for a fatal crash this afternoon.
A van reportedly broke down on I-90 and when the driver got out, he stepped into traffic and was hit by a passing car, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.
Eastbound traffic at Manhattan is backed up as much as four miles. Officials on scene are having trouble rerouting traffic because the Frontage Road is under construction.
The victim was a North Carolina man. The person who hit him was from Missouri.
The crash happened at around 12:46 p. m.
