MISSOULA - The two wildfires that were responsible for much of the smoke that choked the Bitterroot and Missoula valleys over the past few months are still burning, but they seem to be on their last legs.
The Sawtooth Fire near Hamilton is 80% contained thanks in part to recent rains and cooler temperatures. The blaze is being monitored by air patrols now as it burns itself out on its western edge.
The Sawtooth Fire has burned nearly 6,000, but there's been very little growth in recent days.
Meanwhile, the Mustang Complex Fire is 59% contained and has scorched nearly 341,000, mostly in Idaho. A "short team" is working out loose ends from the fire while overseeing field operations.
