Gallatin National Forest officials have a new wildfire on their hands, burning in the mountains east of Hyalite near the top of the Gallatin Crest in the Livingston Ranger District.
Eight smokejumpers landed in the fire area this afternoon.
Located 20 miles southwest of Livingston, the 10-acre North 8 Mile Fire is burning in steep terrain amid timber mixed with beetle killed trees in the north fork of the 8 Mile Creek drainage, an area that was burned over during the Fridley Fire of 2001.
No word yet on a cause, a helicopter is dropping water on the fire and forest service officials say an air tanker and two single seat air tankers are on order for the incident.
